Gutters are essential to your roofing system as they divert water away from vulnerable materials and lessen the likelihood of moisture damage in different parts of your home. As a homeowner, it is good to know how gutters are installed to give you a better idea of what experts do when they service your home and to make it easier for you to maintain your gutters.
In this post, gutter expert Empire Roofing & More shares three best practices to keep in mind during gutter installation.
1. Use Screws
While standard rivets are good, screws are generally better for your downspouts. This is because they’re easier to remove than rivets when you need to flush out the debris and clogs in your downspout. We typically use ¼-inch hex screws as their heads are easier to handle and hide, and we paint our screws before using them on downspouts to make them less noticeable.
2. Ensure Proper Sloping
Sloping is essential for proper drainage and diversion of water. Typically, each gutter should slope toward the downspout at a ¼-inch angle for every 10 feet of the system. For gutter lines longer than 40 feet, it’s ideal to pitch the gutter downward from the center to a downspout at each end. Furthermore, we make sure to adjust accordingly depending on the situation.
3. Take Care of Post-Installation Cleanups
As professionals, we make sure that at the end of every installation, our work areas and the owner’s property are clean. We properly dispose of debris, residuals and other waste to give each client peace of mind and satisfaction.
